Pet Wellness ServicesOur philosophy at Princeton Animal Hospital & Carnegie Cat Clinic is to provide a customized approach to each patient and client we see because each patient and client has a unique history and needs. We also believe it is vitally important to provide our clients with as much information as possible so we can make an informed decision together as to the appropriate course of treatment for their pet. Often there may be different approaches to your pet's health. If so, we will give you the pros and cons of each option so that you know you are making the best choice for your pet.

Wellness Examinations

Preventative medicine is fundamental to keeping our clients' pets healthy, which is why we recommend wellness examinations every 6 months. Our pets age much faster than we do and a good rule of thumb is that your pet will age 7 years for every 1 year of life. Because of this progression, it is important to see your pet more often so that we can monitor the health of your pet as well as diagnose and treat any illnesses early, before it becomes a more serious and costly medical issue.

Your pet's examination begins with a complete history taken by one of our experienced technicians. The history is an important tool in identifying key aspects of your pet's health. During this history, you will be asked a series of questions regarding your pet's health, lifestyle, and environmental risk. There are times when the questions asked may seem irrelevant, but we have found that you can never be too careful about your pet's health and we want to make sure we have as much information as possible. Often, these questions prompt owners to supply us with important information that they otherwise would have forgotten or neglected to mention.

Once the history has been taken, the doctor will be informed so that he or she can perform a more thorough examination of your pet. The next step in the exam is the physical examination. Our physical exams begin with a complete 12-point, nose-to-tail examination of your pet. Most clients notice the doctors listening to the heart and lungs and visually examining the eyes and ears, but our physical exam does not stop there. We examine the health and function of other areas of the body, such as the teeth, mucus membranes, skin, reproductive organs, muscular/skeletal, as well as the nervous and circulatory systems. This ensures we do not miss anything regarding your pet's health.

Once the physical exam is completed, our doctors will pull together the findings from both the physical exam and history to develop a plan for your pet.

Vaccinations: The Cornerstone of Preventative Medicine

Vaccines are often part of our discussions with you when developing a preventative healthcare plan. There has been much conversation regarding vaccines in recent years with many different and sometimes competing views regarding their administration. While there is not any hard evidence that we are over-vaccinating our animals, our hospital has adopted a balanced approach based on recommendations by the American Animal Hospital Association.

The basis of our approach is to create a risk assessment that takes into account your pet's age, lifestyle, and environmental influences. Only after completing a proper risk assessment will we decide on an appropriate vaccination protocol with you. This may also change from year to year depending on changes to your pet's health, lifestyle, age, and other factors.

Pet Wellness ServicesLab Testing

One of the most important aspects of preventive medicine is the use of blood screens to detect the early signs of a number of disease processes. Princeton Animal Hospital & Carnegie Cat Clinic recommends that all of our pets receive yearly lab work at their wellness visits.

These blood screens are crucial in the early detection of disease processes and act as a window into the body, allowing us to see things such as organ function, red and white blood cell counts, and electrolyte balance. When run consistently from year to year, we are able to establish a baseline of normal parameters and are better able to track minute changes in functions of the body.

Microchipping: Safe & Reliable Pet ID

Does your pet have a microchip? Each year, millions of pets go missing and many don't make it back home. Microchipping your pet is a safe, simple and effective way to prevent this tragedy. About the size of a grain of rice, identification microchips are encoded with your pet's vital information and implanted beneath your pet's skin, usually between the shoulder blades. Veterinary hospitals and animal shelters across the country are equipped with special scanners capable of reading these microchips. The information in the chip is used to reunite you with your pet.

Princeton Animal Hospital & Carnegie Cat Clinic uses the HomeAgain microchip system. HomeAgain provides a number of very useful services to pet owners such as their National Pet Recovery Database, Lost Pet Specialists, Rapid Lost Pet Alerts, Lost Pet Medical Insurance, Travel Assistance for Found Pets and more.

We are also able to provide our clients that travel internationally with their pets microchips for international travel.

Our Pharmacy

Pet Wellness ServicesIn numerous acute or chronic conditions, medication is required to cure or alleviate symptoms. At Princeton Animal Hospital & Carnegie Cat Clinic we believe that timely and convenient access to these medications is an important aspect of caring for your pet. For this reason, we maintain a comprehensive pharmacy.

Not only does our pharmacy mean you don't have to wait for important medicines for your pet, but there is a direct line of communication between the examination room and the pharmacy window. Each medication becomes part of your pet's medical record, which reduces the chance for errors and enhances our ability to monitor its use and the outcome for your pet.

Refills are easy too. Simply give us a call or visit our online pharmacy and we can either mail them to you or have them ready at your next visit.

After Your Pet's Exam

Invoicing takes place at the reception desk. Our client care specialists review the invoice with you and address any questions that you might have.

We also suggest that you use this time to pick up any additional items you may need such as Heartgard and Frontline. Our prices are very competitive and often beat those you would see in the on-line pharmacies. Also, by purchasing these products here, you support our hospital's ability to have the longest outpatient hours of any general veterinary practice in central New Jersey; maintain access to veterinary service 7-days-per-week, 24-hours-per-day; and know that all of our pets are cared for by our highly trained 24-hour nursing staff.
